VPS help!
I’m looking forward to get a VPS server with root access and ssh login, the requirements i have are not special, i just want to be able to have a mutt, screen and an irssi. It’ll we awesome if i can use it as build server too, so debian based system would be prefered. Did someone of you know/have a VPS that fits my requierements? Please let me know!

I currently use linode.com. Very few restrictions, though it is US based currently, though some are hinting that they MAY look into an European site.
You can install many of their default distros, or there are instructions on how to install your own distro. Very well designed account and server management.
Pricing is honest and fair. There are no required contracts and leaving early in the monthly cycle gets you a pro-rated return.
Support is fast and helpful. There is a good community support model for their services as well.
I have been with them for about 2 months and have been loving it.
I have been using glesys.se for 6 months now. They have lots of different configuration for memory/disk/transfere.
Various distributions can be choosen. Based on OpenVZ.
Can’t say anything about their support, since I haven’t needed any yet.
I use RimuHosting (http://rimuhosting.com/) and I love it. Their support is great.
Currently hosting one of my domains at lylix.net. Wide variety of features, currently only doing a bit of web hosting, and a proxy for echolink for myself. I’m using
uname -a
Linux 67-228-218-205.lx-vs.net 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.028stab053.10 #1 SMP Tue Apr 1 14:58:47 MSD 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Debian Stable if I read that right.

I use a dedicated server in serverpronto, at $30 is cheaper than lots of VPSs.
For sheer price, I’d recommend Virpus (www.virpus.com). I’ve got their cheapest plan, which is 13 USD per month and perfect for my needs. And yes, I’m running Debian stable.
Unfortunately, their support is about what you’d expect for that price. I haven’t had problems with them recently, but a couple of months ago there were some connectivity issues that required help from their support team.
Addendum: I’m actually paying 10 USD per month, because I found a coupon from Virpus on WebHostingTalk [1]. You can check there for special offers from VPS providers.

Hello, I’ve been using linode and absolutely have to recommend them. I’m currently on their lowest priced offer, and never had any problem, it all runs very smooth on XEN.
Ubuntu 8.04, screen+irssi, full LAMP, and even Django alongside.
Along with the great service, they offer hosted dns, and you get a great control panel, with some monitoring graphics, a shutdown watchdog and recovery options.
When the Newark datacenter started taking orders, I simply filed a ticket on their support system, to have my vps transferred there, and I could even see the progress of the process on their control panel.
If you go with them, get them to allocate your vps in their Newark datacenter, to get the lowest latency from Europe.
Please use my referral url, if you go through, I should get one month for free: http://www.linode.com/?r=3e400872c153977f67179974b71ef92aad701027
I currently use SliceHost. Great unmanaged VPS.
I highly recommend Gandi Hosting. http://www.gandi.net/hosting/
$7.50 a month for one share, and I get 3GB of system disk, 5GB of data disk, 256MB of RAM, and 5Mbit/s unmetered bandwidth. They offer various distributions, including Debian, and they have local mirrors.
While not a technical consideration, I would also point out that Gandi sponsors Debconf every year, and otherwise supports Debian.
There is also cheapvps.com / cheapvps.co.uk which I have been using for a few weeks. Works well for me.
They have both OpenVZ and XEN. I use XEN with Ubuntu, but they have Debian and others as well.
There is currently a promo code FILLEM which gives you double everything: http://cheapvps.co.uk/plans
Wow, at about $9/month for 256M of RAM, Gandi looks great. And they are in France.
I am with vpslink.com for a month now, where I am paying $8 for 64M of RAM. Its enough for a mail server, for instance, especially if you want your server in the USA.
I am definitely going to test drive Gandi, though.
@clayton: One caveat with Gandi, BTW: they currently have a closed beta, so you’ll need to mail them to ask if you can try their hosting. However, they seemed more than willing to give an account to an open source developer.
Also, one really nice feature: if you need more disk, but you don’t otherwise need more shares, you can buy more disk at $0.30/GB/month.
I have to leave another +1 for Linode. Very highly recommended.
Go for Gandi !
As said above, you might have to ask them to get an account, but they are great !
They also sell Domains, a bit high priced, but it’s a company with real humans inside, plenty of ethics (they hesitated selling .cn domains and blogged about it).

I use Bitfolk.com for my VPS.
Also if you listen to episode 13 http://podcast.ubuntu-uk.org/2008/08/30/s01e13-dont-be-cruel/ of the Ubuntu Podcast from the UK LoCo team you’ll find we have a competition where you can win £200 worth of VPS from them.
I’ve been using xen hosting from http://vpsvillage.com/ for around 18 months now. Pretty satisfied with it, you get full root on your VPS and a selection of preinstalled basic systems (including debian).
They start at $5 a month
Linode, Linode, Linode!
The best available, easy to use and Xen-based.
@Rusty, sorry dude, but you are a bit confused. 2.6.18-53 is a redhat or centos looking kernel. The fact that it has .el5 towards the end of the version string just further highlights that.
cat /etc/redhat-release to see if you are running on centos or rhel. (most likely centos for webhosting)
Like several others I’d have to suggest linode for the best bang-for-your-buck style hosting. Great service, honest pricing, and good product.
Linode has been working great for me in the past months, never had a problem, highly recommended.
I use http://www.gplhost.com/ not the cheapest around but an excellent support
Cheers
JD
I’ve got a Panix VPS, for $20/month it’s definitely not cheap but it’s really really stable. The Panix folks know their stuff (they’re after all the second oldest ISP in the US still functioning) and yeah, they’ve got Debian as one of the OS alternatives
They have remote console access via a special SSH account, nightly rsync backups for free and whole slew of other interesting features for free
You can reach them at http://www.panix.com
Nicolas,
I’ve been with vpslink (http://vpslink.com) for three months now and am really enjoying it. It has been my first venture into a VPS and I’m using it as a private mail relay and unrestricted secure shell account.
I trawled around for alternatives and specifically chose this one because it’s cheap and because they were one of the few that I could find offering Ubuntu and the only one I found that offered a Hardy LTS option. Debian Etch also available.
It’s fast to get started and you get full access to a bare bones OS install of your choice. root is enabled by default, but it’s easy to switch that off after creating your first user account.
Most problems/complaints I see from people are due to their not understanding the unmanaged nature of the VPS. You have complete control, which is sometimes too much for some.
Their terms of service are fair. No seti@home type stuff and you’ll be alright. You can start with the entry level option and upgrade as necessary if you need more power.
For a build environment, I would suggest their Xen option as it allows for some leeway through swap space if you run out of RAM mid compile.
If you decide to give them a try, email me if you’d like a referral code that will give you 10% off when you sign up.
Best
Chris
Linode.com. Definetly.
I highly recommend linode.com, as others have mentioned.
I also recommend Gandi Hosting. It’s still in beta, but stable for a couple of months (before they were some stability problems). Good price, list of features growing, good support, and free software sponsors (http://www.gandi.net/soutient/?lang=en). A great company with real people behind as said before.
@Gandi Hosting:
I asked them a few question about their hosting-service via email. Fast and nice answer, but the price for their hosting will be double after the beta.
And then – for me – the price isn’t convenient any more
————- from the answer email:
Yes, the price 6 euros (during the beta => 12 Euros after) is for one share for one month.
