I asked them a few question about their hosting-service via email. Fast and nice answer, but the price for their hosting will be double after the beta.
And then – for me – the price isn’t convenient any more

I also recommend Gandi Hosting. It’s still in beta, but stable for a couple of months (before they were some stability problems). Good price, list of features growing, good support, and free software sponsors (http://www.gandi.net/soutient/?lang=en). A great company with real people behind as said before.

I’ve been with vpslink (http://vpslink.com) for three months now and am really enjoying it. It has been my first venture into a VPS and I’m using it as a private mail relay and unrestricted secure shell account.

I trawled around for alternatives and specifically chose this one because it’s cheap and because they were one of the few that I could find offering Ubuntu and the only one I found that offered a Hardy LTS option. Debian Etch also available.

It’s fast to get started and you get full access to a bare bones OS install of your choice. root is enabled by default, but it’s easy to switch that off after creating your first user account.

Most problems/complaints I see from people are due to their not understanding the unmanaged nature of the VPS. You have complete control, which is sometimes too much for some.

Their terms of service are fair. No seti@home type stuff and you’ll be alright. You can start with the entry level option and upgrade as necessary if you need more power.

For a build environment, I would suggest their Xen option as it allows for some leeway through swap space if you run out of RAM mid compile.

I’ve got a Panix VPS, for $20/month it’s definitely not cheap but it’s really really stable. The Panix folks know their stuff (they’re after all the second oldest ISP in the US still functioning) and yeah, they’ve got Debian as one of the OS alternatives

They have remote console access via a special SSH account, nightly rsync backups for free and whole slew of other interesting features for free
